the best friend of a (military) man

That a dog is a man’s best friend reminds a widespread way of saying as well, by the way, as in the never enough quoted ‘The Man who laughs’, by Victor Hugo.

Huffington Post informs us today of a commercial spot, commissioned by the Royal Dutch Guide Dog Foundation (KNGF), the Dutch institution that deals with the training of dogs that provide psychological comfort to those who have seen the horrors of war and sometimes are the victims of nightmares caused by the traumas that have suffered during the conflict.

The spot, for the creative direction of Niels Westra, winner of the Dutch “Gouden Loeki” as the best commercial spot, shows a Dutch soldier on the ground, on the battlefield. He sees, not far away, a dead child, along with various other eyesores; the man is reached by a fellow soldier, who tries to ease his pain, approaching his face and licking it.

In the next scene, the faithful friend is revealed to be a dog, just one of those dogs which were mentioned above, trained to alleviate the post-traumatic nightmares of Veterans:
