Earth Hour 2016: Worldwide and in Italy

Earth Hour is an important initiative for giving the Earth a help; climate changes are a problem we must be aware of and, as Leonardo DiCaprio remembered, we cannot take this planet for granted , we have just this one.
Thus, worldwide, for the entire day of March 19th, at 20.30 o’clock according to the different time zones, a “shining shadow” will cover the world, starting in the Pacific Ocean and stopping on the Atlantic coasts. For an hour, people and public institutions will turn off the lights of houses and buildings to say stop to the climate change. The initiative was launched by Wwf in 2007, this year it sounds particularly strong thanks to the climate agreement obtained at Paris’ meeting in December.
It has been calculated that 366 monuments and symbolic places will be turned off, such as Empire State Building in New York, Opera House in Sydney, Eiffel tower in Paris.
As for Italy, the Country we currently live in, over 200 public buildings will be involved; Piero Angela, recently welcomed as a star for a lesson in Turin, will turn off the Trevi Fountain, coloured like our planet and surrounded by jazz live played.
More, the Sforza Castle in Milan, the Theatre Massimo Vittorio Emanuele in Palermo, the Verona Arena, the Pincio staircase in Bologna, the Old Bridge in Florence, the Maschio Angioino of Naples… Thousand of public suppers organised by Wwf and Altromercato will be up throughout Italy, by candlelight. Marco Mengoni, Fedez, Niccolò Fabi, Neri Marcorè will be some testimonials. All the captains of the ‘B’ soccer teams will wear green strips to the arm during the match, and the captains of the Basket League will warm up in a green jersey. The captains and the speakers of the stadiums will be reading a dedicated message. Rugby Italian Federation and the Italian national team will invite people to become ‘champions of the climate’, and Italian people seem likely to do it: according to the opinion polls, 94% of population are involved by the climate change, and the 85% declare to be available to modify their life style to reduce the impact on the environment.

Sky channels are invoved as well. During the match Roma – Inter, the Roma players will wear a jersey with the logo “Sky – Wwf for the Earth Hour”; also foreseen spaces in the stadium. ‘Sky Calcio Live’ will follow the entire initiative since 2.00 pm, Sky Sport 1 HD since 8.00 pm. The cyclists of the Sky team engaged in the “Milano – Sanremo” will wear white bands with the Sky / WWF logo.
A dedicated scheduling will be offered by Sky Cinema Hits, Sky Uno, Sky Arte, Discovery, National Geographic Channel, Dove Tv and DeaKids. A number of activities will be realised in the five Countries Sky is in, e.g. switching off nonessential lights for an hour in the company’s headquarters since 8.30 pm, and the realization of a promo to encourage everyone to do the same.
