What is the difference between a visionary man and a social climber?

‘The values!’, everyone could answer.

Leonardo DiCaprio, in the role of the Great Gatsby, seems to have clear ideas when looks at the sky

and moves his right hand as to grab a star or to greet a Superior Destiny…

To be honest, the character performed by Leonardo, taken from the famous Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s novel,

is in the middle between Good and Evil, being idealistic an immoral in the same time.

Love is important for Gatsby, and ht tries to have Daisy back, because he was his first love (unless that love

too is to be managed as a material thing).

Business is business, anyay, and our heroe does not find problems in doing his affairs with immoral people,

to obtain what he wants. And that is why we are not able to love him.

‘The Great Gatsby’ is a spectacular film, and makes his spectators breath the dream and incongruences of

life in the same time.

Robert Pattinson è entrato nel nostro immaginario come vampiro, fa un certo effetto vederlo nei panni dell’arrampicatore sociale. Una prevedibile conseguenza, in fondo.

Georges Duroy, meglio noto comeBel Ami, nasce dalla penna di Guy de Maupassant. Ha fatto la mia conoscenza quando avevo sedici anni, in quella stagione che si dedica alle buone letture, dai classici russi a quelli francesi, qualche italiano e magari quel Joyce tanto amato dalla professoressa.

Vive ancora nella letteratura per la sua ambiziosa arrampicata sociale, i cui gradini furono l’amicizia di Charles Forestier, poi l’amore della di lui consorte e tutta una serie di relazioni viziose e virtuose (importante anche l’incontro con l’editore Rousset).

Arrivò a far cambiare il cognome da Duroy a Du Roy (“del re”, suona meglio) ma finí con l’indossare il soprannome che le sue conquiste gli attribuirono, quello di un seduttore cinico ma di bell’aspetto: Bel Ami, appunto.

Il film ‘Bel Ami –storia di un seduttore’, è una coproduzione italo- franco –britannica. È stato diretto
da Declan Donnellan e Nick Ormerod. Oltre a Pattinson, nel cast vale la pena di ricordare Uma Thurman nel ruolo di Madeleine Forestier.
