Walt Disney
has been in filmmakers’ paradise for many years now, but the good Tom Hanks will take on his likeness with a rare nobility of intent: to bring Mary Poppins back to life and tell the story of how it was made.

‘Saving Mr. Banks‘ will take us by the hand and tell us how one of the most iconic films in everyone’s imagination came to be.

It was not an easy gestation, so they say.
It took fourteen long years, with no shortage of misunderstandings and quarrels between Disney and Pamela Lyndon Travers (pen name of Helen Lyndon Goff), the Australian author of the book.

She chose the leading lady, Julie Andrews, on the spot after hearing her just once on the phone, but on other matters she rarely agreed with Walt, nor with the Sherman brothers (who composed the hit Chim Chim Cher-ee).

The film, directed by John Lee Hancock, will be released in U.S. theaters on December 13th, and in Italy the following February.

The title comes from George Banks, who was the real-life father of Helen Lyndon Goff and lived right at 17 Cherry Tree Lane.

Apart from Tom Hanks, the cast also includes Emma Thompson (Poppins), Colin Farrell (Banks), Ruth Wilson (the writer), Jason Schwartzman, and Paul Giamatti.

Walt Disney
