The famous Hollywood Sign is in the year of its first century, one hundred years since the iconic sign appeared for the first time, illuminated by 3,700 light bulbs, on the Griffith Park hill overlooking the City of Stars.
The Sign, in view of the anniversary, was cleaned and restored, by using a particular waterproof paint in the self-cleaning color Emerald Rain Refresh, and the entire operation was followed minute by minute for weeks on the Hollywood Sign website, through a video camera active 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Last October 31 (maybe better known as Halloween), Councilmember Nithya Raman and the Los Angeles City Council declared it to be the “Hollywood Sign Day”.
The Sign «is the pride of Los Angeles and we are happy that fans around the world will be able to see the new look for the 100th birthday» Jeff Zarrinnam, president of the Hollywood Sign Trust, said; as for the letters, «they won’t fly away anymore, except in disaster movies!», he also added. «The Hollywood sign is important to the entire fabric of Los Angeles. It is the symbol of Los Angeles, it is the symbol of California, it is the symbol of America. It is our Statue of Liberty».
